The Response of Local White Guinea Yam Cultivars to the Vine Cutting Propagation Technique Using Locally Available Rooting Substrates

Good quality planting materials for yam cultivation is a major challenge and adapting the most preferred local varieties to high ratio propagation methods such as vine cutting could help ameliorate this constraint. An experiment was conducted in screen house at CSIR-Savanna Agricultural Research Institute assess response of ‘Labako’, ‘Nyamenti’ ‘Kpamyo’ (check) under different substrates. The 3 x 6 factorial arranged completely randomized design with replications. Single node cuttings were obtained from months old plants established various rooting substrates (carbonized rice husk; fermented bran; aged top-soil ,cocopeat carbonized husk + top-soil; 2:1).Highly significant differences (P<0.001) existed main effects interaction factors. All cultivars attained 100% survival CRH husk) cocopeat. Kpamyo Nyamenti had 89.6% regeneration cocopeat, FRB (fermented bran) CRH. Labako exhibited maximum shoot growth (31 cm) whiles minimum (10 observed ARH (aged Kpamyo. Six nodes produced by CRH, same substrate. initiated 88% tuberization, higher than 75%. Generally, successfully adapted technique well are locally available, hence less expensive acquire therefore recommended cost-effective single popular cultivars.
